Inside size = product × grid + 2 × padding on each side, rounded up to the next mm. Outside adds the board: two walls on length and width, two flap layers on height. Everything you type stays in this browser.

How the box size is worked out

  1. Inside size on each side = product × items along that side + 2 × padding, rounded up to the next mm.
  2. Outside size adds the board: two walls on length and width, two flap layers on height (3 ply ≈ 3 mm, 5 ply ≈ 7 mm, 7 ply ≈ 10 mm board).
  3. Volumetric weight = outside L × B × H in cm ÷ 5000.
  4. Best packing: with turning allowed, every way of placing the item and arranging the same number of items is tried, and the one with the lowest volumetric weight wins.

Questions

How do I calculate the box size for my product?

Inside size = product size × number of items along that side + 2 × padding. Add the board thickness to get the outside size the courier measures.

How much padding should I leave?

About 5 mm for a snug fit (books, boxed goods), 10 mm as a standard allowance, and 25 mm or more for fragile items that need bubble wrap or foam around them.

Inside size or outside size: which do I give the box maker?

Give the box maker the inside size; boxes are made to inside dimensions. Couriers bill on the outside size, which is a little bigger because of the board.

Is the suggested ply a strength guarantee?

No. It is a rule of thumb from the packed weight. If boxes will be stacked or stored for long, use the ply guide, which estimates box strength.
