Dieline

PDF 1:1 and DXF are true scale for a plotter, sample table or die maker. Print the PDF at 100% and measure the 100 mm check bar. Check a sample before making a die.

How an RSC dieline is drawn

  1. Panels. From the left: glue flap, length, width, length, width.
  2. Flaps. Flap depth = width ÷ 2, so the outer flaps meet in the middle.
  3. Blank length = glue flap + 2 × (length + width). Blank width (deckle) = height + width.
  4. Slots. A slot of about 6 mm is cut on each vertical crease, from the flap edge to the flap crease.
  5. Glue flap. Its ends are tapered (about 15°) so it doesn't catch when the box is folded.

With Inside sizes, the blank is exactly the one the box cost calculator prices. For a 300 × 200 × 150 mm box with a 35 mm glue flap that is 1035 × 350 mm.

Add board thickness is a rule of thumb: length + t, width + t and height + 2t, where t is the board thickness (A flute ≈ 4.8 mm, C ≈ 4.0, B ≈ 3.0, E ≈ 1.6). Check a sample before making a die.

Questions

What is an RSC box?

A regular slotted carton (FEFCO 0201): the everyday shipping box. Four side panels and a glue flap in one sheet, with top and bottom flaps of half the width, so the outer flaps meet in the middle.

What is a dieline?

The flat drawing of the box blank: solid lines where the board is cut and dashed lines where it is creased to fold. Die makers, sample-cutting tables and corrugator operators all work from it.

Which file does my die maker need?

The DXF or the 1:1 PDF. Both are true scale in millimetres. The DXF has only CUT (red) and CREASE (blue, dashed) layers, which is what CAD tools and sample tables expect. The A4 PDF is for sharing, not cutting.

Why is my sheet size different from the calculator?

The calculator prices the blank from inside sizes: 2 × (L + W) + glue flap by H + W. If you choose “Add board thickness”, the dieline adds the board thickness to each panel (length + t, width + t, height + 2t), so the sheet comes out slightly bigger.
